FITTING THE NFL MOLD

Ideally, a TE will have a height between 6'4" and 6'6", weigh somewhere between 245 and 260 lbs, and have an arm length over 33". While blocking is a great trait to have, we want to look for TEs who have receiving upside. Therefore, the most important tests to predict success at the next level will be the 40-yard dash, the 10-yard split, and the vertical jump. We're looking for scores around 4.6-4.75 for the 40, 1.55-1.65 for the 10 yd split, and 32-36" for the vertical. While his scores aren't going to blow anyone away, he scored well enough and is big enough to have true success at the next level. Statistically, his Speed Score and Burst Score are all at or over the average grade. I'm not concerned with his 4.71 40 time.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION

Two huge factors that scouts are looking for at this position are: Do they have consistent hands to be a QBs safety valve and are they truly a TE or an OL or WR in disguise? Fannin Jr was out of this world in production as he finished in the 100th percentile in the college dominator rating accounting for nearly half of the team's receiving yards and TDs himself. He finished with over a 70% catch rate in all three years, showing reliable hands. This past year he had an incredible season leading all TEs in the nation in both receptions and receiving yards. The biggest knock-on Fannin Jr is that he played at a small school and faced lesser competition. He did just fine against the bigger and better teams. He went (11-137-1) vs 8th ranked Penn State, (8-145-1) vs 25th ranked Texas A&M, and (6-74-1) vs Toledo.

WATCHING THE TAPE

The 2nd play I watched HFJ hurdled a guy and on the 3rd play he stiff armed a defender into the dirt. This guy is an athletic monster. His best game this season was against Penn State, and they had no answer for him. He routinely gashed them for huge yards, shed tackles, and danced into the endzone untouched. He lacks that top end speed but makes up for it by routinely trying juke moves that leave defenders uneasy and back pedaling due to his size. He has great hands, and he is able to make acrobatic catches. He is a decent pass blocker as well and should be able to come in and immediately be an every down TE for a needy team.

THE LANDING SPOT

BOOOOOOO!!! I comped HFJ to David Njoku and then he gets drafted in the 3rd round to the Browns to sit behind Njoku. You can’t say the Browns don’t have a type. This kills his value for redraft leagues and leaves his dynasty outlook with a big question mark. Njoku just signed a 4-year deal with the Browns but it also has void years every year starting in 2026. This means your guess is as good as mine when or whether HFJ will ever start for Cleveland. On top of these concerns, the Browns QB room has even more question marks and concerns.

WHERE TO DRAFT HIM

In redraft leagues HFJ should go undrafted and unless Njoku gets injured, he won’t be worth the waiver add. In dynasty rookie drafts it is hard to put a price on him. He is the most athletically talented TE in this years draft but there isn’t a clear path to when or how much work he will receive throughout his rookie contract and I don’t want to be stuck holding a TE2 in Cleveland for 4 years if they decide to keep Njoku. I would draft him at the end of the 2nd round if I really needed TE help but would prefer to draft him in the 3rd round.
